A timely diagnosis can change everything

For many families in Cabo del Este, seeing a specialist is not always within reach. And when it comes to the heart, timing is essential.
With this reality in mind, Fundacion Costa Palmas, in partnership with Corazon de Nino, promoted a pediatric heart disease detection program in La Ribera, focused on children and adolescents from 0 to 18 years old.
Through six months of work and a process that included school screenings and specialized medical evaluations, the program brought these services closer to the community.
In total, 447 children and adolescents were screened, 81 were called for evaluation, and 58 received specialized medical care.
These results reflect the importance of early detection, especially because behind every number there is a story that could have gone unnoticed.
Kimberly, 18, was one of the young people identified during the process. She is now being evaluated to determine whether she needs a specialized procedure. Obed, 17, was diagnosed with a congenital condition that requires follow-up to prevent future complications. Dante, 13, continues to be studied for a possible arrhythmia under medical monitoring.
Stories like these show the value of bringing health care closer to the community. The program also helped identify other conditions that require attention, expanding its impact beyond its initial goal.
This effort was made possible through the joint work of specialists, local medical staff, and strategic partners, proving that when access, detection, and support align, the impact is real.
