In its mission to preserve natural resources, contribute to biodiversity conservation, and promote community development, Fundación Costa Palmas has undertaken a significant initiative in the palm grove of Santiago, one of the most fire-prone areas in the municipality of Los Cabos. The foundation supported the operation by providing machinery, including dump trucks and an excavator, which facilitated the efficient removal of accumulated combustible material.
The cleanup operation was supported by a local brigade of 10 people from Santiago—seven men and three women—dedicated to fire prevention. The brigade performed tasks such as pruning, stacking, and removing dead material, successfully removing a total of 200 tons of dry palm, which otherwise could have increased the risk of forest fires.
The palm grove of Santiago is a vital water resource in the desert region of Baja California Sur, known for its diverse flora and fauna and its crucial role in the local ecological balance. It not only provides essential water for wildlife but also serves as a refuge for various forms of life in an arid environment.
This activity, resulting from the collaboration between civil society, government authorities, and Fundación Costa Palmas, represents a significant step forward in the protection and conservation of this unique ecosystem. Besides its environmental benefits, it is also crucial for safeguarding the well-being of the residents of Santiago who live nearby.
By supporting conservation initiatives such as the cleanup of the palm grove of Santiago, Fundación Costa Palmas reaffirms its commitment to protecting natural resources and enhancing biodiversity in the region. This collaboration demonstrates the positive impact we can achieve when we work together to safeguard our natural heritage and strengthen the safety of our region. Together, we make a difference!
