In line with its mission to promote ecosystem conservation and environmental awareness, Fundación Costa Palmas aligned itself this year with the Sea Turtle Protection Program's Management Plan of the Los Cabos Municipality, leading to a series of impactful actions.
In collaboration with Costa Palmas staff, municipal authorities, and the Director of Ecology, daily and nightly patrols span 134 linear kilometers of beachfront. These crucial patrols are fundamental to achieving the goals of the Marina Turtle Protection program. They encompass tasks like identifying nesting traces, categorizing them by species for evaluation and documentation, and conducting on-site incubation within Costa Palmas' turtle corral.
A vital component of these endeavors includes the recruitment of personnel for weekend sea turtle protection patrols. By bolstering Costa Palmas' pre-existing conservation work, this initiative strengthens the protection efforts in the region. To further fortify the Sea Turtle Protection Program, Fundación Costa Palmas acquired an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), generously placed at the disposal of those overseeing sea turtle protection efforts.
Last September, Fundación Costa Palmas, in coordination with municipal authorities, commenced the release of sea turtles on the La Ribera beaches, fully adhering to prevailing regulations. The initiative involved the dedicated efforts of Costa Palmas personnel, local authorities, and community volunteers.
The results were truly astounding, surpassing the achievements of the previous year. An impressive 824 sea turtle nests were protected within Costa Palmas' incubation corral in the La Ribera delegation, safeguarding a remarkable total of 84,000 sea turtle eggs.
In its steadfast commitment to the environment and the East Cape community, Fundación Costa Palmas continues to uphold its role as a prominent guardian of sea turtles in La Ribera, with even greater aspirations for success in 2024.
